 Hi, I'm James Miller, an electrical engineering student.  I am currently taking Art 200X, explorations in art.  I am from Fairbanks, AK.  My hobbies are listening to music, basketball and watching YouTube.  I have a wonderful dog named Lucky, he is a beagle and dachshund mix.

Do you paint, sculpt or draw?

The only time I draw is a rough sketch of a system for engineering homework.

 Do you own any art?

The only original work I have is the painting from my dad.  I have a reprint of an oil painting of Albert Einstein.  I also have reprints of The Starry Night and Cafe Terrace at Night by Vincent Van Gogh.

Do you attend First Fridays?

I have only been to one First Friday, it was an enjoyable experience.  One painting that caught my attention was a painting of a Birch tree. There was different colors between each branch, that resembled stained glass. 

Do you enjoy going to art museums?

Art museums are fun,  I would love to travel to Europe to view the art museums.

Click here for a link to the site where the picture was from. Why I like this piece of art? I like the perspective that this figure gives.  Don Quixote, his side kick the foreground has a defined shape, the further back you look into the painting, the objects devolve into lines. Having the painting in black and white creates a stark contrast between objects and the environment. Don Quixote holding a lance and a shield on his back creates a tone, like how is about to go to battle the windmills in the background. What about the presentation?  I enjoy the presentation because of the simplicity of the painting.  Even though it's just a few rough shapes and lines, I was able to distinguish it was Don Quixote. The Effects of World War 1 on Art Tunnellers , 1916   Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson. London, England Tunnellers relates to World War 1 by the tunnel worker wearing a gas mask.  He is holding out a Canary, which acted as a warning sign for dangerous gases.  Marek Pruszewicz from bbc.com stated that Germans in WW1 had pressurized gas canisters that released chlorine gas.  The main cause of death from mustard gas was asphyxiation (Pruszewicz).    The art elements I like about Tunnellers is the line work, especially on the tunneller himself.  I also like the pattern on the wooden supports holding up the tunnel.  I also like the contrast between the illusion of light and the darkness of the tunnel.  This painting stirs up a sense of dread and fear, not knowing if the tunnel is free of deadly gas.    An Eruption of Vesuvius by Moonlight by Pierre-Jacques Volaire in 1774.  I like the texture of the lava and the hills.  I also like the value on the clouds next to the moon, the illusion of light appears brighter on the clouds based on how close they are relative to the moon.  The right half of painting looks calm and peaceful.  The left half gives a glimpse of the immense power of a volcanic eruption.  You can see the lava flowing from Mt. Vesuvius, which dooms the city of Pompeii.  The presentation of Mt. Vesuvius is awe-inspiring and I would like to own a copy.   Eruption of Vesuvius with Destruction of a Roman City.  Painting by Sebastion Pether in 1824. The illusion of the reflected moonlight across the water is amazing, the brightness is centered around the middle and tapers the further it travels from the center.  The texture of the smoke from the eruption and the city smoke is incredible.  The presentation shown elicits a sense of dread, knowing the volcano engulfed an entir
